Kilka
tygodni temu, ukazał się długo oczekiwany dodatek do systemu
Ogniem i Mieczem, wprowadzający nowy poziom rozgrywek. Do tej
pory, od samego początku istnienia systemu, funkcjonowały dwa
poziomy (z czterech opisanych w podręczniku). Były to Podjazd i
Dywizja.
The long awaited supplement for By Fire and Sword introducing a new level of game play was published several weeks ago. Since the game’s release until now, there were two levels available (out of four mentioned in the rulebook) – Skirmish and Divisional.
Podjazd to w skrócie pojedynki zwiadu.
Skirmish level generally represents encounters between scouting parties – small reconnaissance forces that are tasked with recon, acquiring provisions or raiding the enemy forces. You can only play with troop types which historically had a reconnaissance role, which means many other types are unavailable. Skirmish forces are built with simple army lists. Battles take about 1.5 to 2 hours.
Natomiast Dywizja to poziom pozwalający odtwarzać duże bitwy.
poziomie Podjazd. Niestety poziom ten jest obarczony dwoma
zasadniczymi wadami. Pierwszą z nich jest skala. Dowodzimy jedynie
niewielkimi siłami, które jedynie z rzadka przypominają bardziej
armię niż bandę. Drugą wadą to ograniczony wybór jednostek. Nie
dysponujemy pełną pulą oddziałów. Silahdarowie, zachodni
plądrowaniem wsi w poszukiwaniu jajek i owsa.
The Divisional level on the other hand recreates large battles. Army structures are more complex. Forces are divided into regiments, the command system is expanded, armies are quite large and the playing time is very long, up to 8-9 hours.
Therefore, most tournaments are played at the Skirmish level. Unfortunately this situation has two major drawbacks. The first one is scale. You can only use small forces that resemble more of a warband than an army. The second one is limited choice of units. You do not have access to the full range of troop types. Silahdar, western pikemen or medium artillery did not participate in plundering villages or searching for chickens and oats.
This is where the Task Force level comes in. Authors emphasize that this is a tournament format. So what is different compared to the Skirmish and Divisional levels? Surely the game scale. Each army includes from several to over a dozen units (squadrons and commanders, guns, wagons). Thus, forces needed for the game are larger than at the Skirmish level and resemble an extended regiment from the Divisional level. However, armies use the Motivation rules, so games are fairly quick. After several games required to get used to the format, you can easily play a battle in two-and-a-half to three hours.
Przyjrzyjmy
się więc bliżej książce i zasadom w niej zawartym. Książka
podzielona jest na dwie części. Mamy zasady Zgrupowań oraz
listy armii. Po dwie, trzy na nację. Całość, jak przyzwyczaił
nas Wargamer, jest pięknie wydana, oprawiona w twardą okładkę,
cudownie ilustrowana i pełna zdjęć pięknie pomalowany modeli, do
czego rekę przyłożył niejako Szeperd. Spoko prac, prezentowanych
na tym blogu trafiło też do zasad. Zasadom wyszło to na pewno na
dobre.
Pierwsza
część zamyka się w kilkunastu stronach opisujących zasady
przygotowania gry, w tym zasady konstrukcji armii, wyboru
scenariusza, funkcjonowania zwiadu itd. Jest też lista scenariuszy
specjalnie przygotowanych dla tego poziomu. Na duży plus oceniam:
-
-
nowe zasady modeli specjalnych.
Let us take a closer look at the book and the rules in it. The book is divided into two parts: the Task Force rules, and army lists, two to three per nation. The book, as always is the case with Wargamer, is beautifully published, bound in hard cover, with excellent illustrations, and full of photos of lovely painted figures, some of which were painted by Szeperd [a miniature painter and one the the blog’s writers]. Many of the pictures from our blog made their way into the book, much to the book’s benefit.
The first part includes less than twenty pages of rules regarding the game preparation, including army building, scenario selection, reconnaissance and other rules. There is also a scenario list compiled specially for this level of play. My favourite new features are:
-
reconnaissance is
no
longer just a numerical value, like at
the
Skirmish
level, but an actual encounter
between the vanguards.
Additionally,
the
reconnaissance effects can be used by both players, not only the one
with the higher reconnaissance value,
- task forces are divided into infantry, cavalry and mixed types, which greatly facilitates playing infantry-based armies,
- new rules for special miniatures.

- new rules for special miniatures.
Druga
część podręcznika to listy armii. Jest ich 33 i są zbliżone
wyglądem do list podjazdowych. Nie ma regimentów a jedynie
jedna lista z poziomami, odblokowującymi kolejne oddziały. Do
dyspozycji mamy pełen wachlarz formacji. Są więc formacje
pikiniersko-muszkieterskie, oddziały janczarów, azabów, segbanów,
husarii, działa średnie, umocnienia polowe, szańce i wszelkie
dostępne narzędzia służące do prowadzenia bitew na XVIIw. polu.
Zgrupowanie wprowadziło też nowy surowiec, który zwiększył ilość
dostępnych możliwości komponowania sił a równocześnie uczynił
The second part of the rulebook comprises army lists. There are 33 of them in total and they are similar to Skirmish level lists. They are not divided into regiments. Rather, they are single lists divided into Force Strength tiers that unlock new units. Players can enjoy the full range of formations to choose from. There are pike and shot units, janissaries, azab, segban, winged hussars, medium artillery, field fortifications, earthworks and all the other features of a 17th century battlefield. The Task Force level also introduces a new asset that allows for more choices during army construction, while making it more intuitive. Gone are restrictions such as "one unit per 2 can be equipped with lances". Now armies have Supply points which can be spent on lances, arquebuses, armor, shields, or spears for your units. If you’re short on Supplies, you can purchase a transport wagon that will grant you more. Depending on the army, Supply points can be required to field, for example, artillery (as in the case of poorly organized Turkish artillery) or some of the commanders (e.g. Muscovite).
Podobnie
rozwiązano zwiad i generowanie punktów zwiadu. W armii punkty
O +1, czasem +2. Co ważne,
nie każda dragonia zwiększa zwiad i nie każde działo go
zmniejsza!
Dlatego
zwiadu nie ograniczają. Na co warto zwrócić uwagę:
-
intuicyjny sposób budowania armii, wzbogacony o nowe mechanizmy,
-
szeroki wachlarz jednostek do wyboru,
-
możliwość głębszego planowania armii - można w miarę
precyzyjnie zaplanować skuteczność zwiadu,
-
husaria itd.)
Reconnaissance rules received similar treatment. Reconnaissance points are generated by units in your vanguard. However, this number can be changed. Some units, such as pikemen, wagons, or artillery restrict your reconnaissance capabilities (for example Swedish pikemen impose a -1 recon penalty per squadron), while others, such as dragoons or all kinds of light cavalry, boost your recon score, usually by +1, or sometimes by +2. Importantly, not all dragoons increase your reconnaissance points, and not all artillery decreases them! It all depends on the way in which a given army used these weapons and formations. The Turkish artillery used heavy guns with slow means of transport (ox-drawn). Therefore, they generate negative reconnaissance points. Swedish artillery, on the other hand, was well organized, with modern, much lighter guns and their doctrine for using artillery on the battlefield was completely different from the Turkish. Consequently, they do not impede your reconnaissance. Some points worth mentioning:
- intuitive army composition, improved by new mechanisms,
- a wide selection of troop types,
- more involved army planning is now possible – you can more or less predict the your reconnaissance efficiency,
- indicating an army’s most valuable units (with one or two stars), the loss of which is more detrimental to other units’ motivation (e.g. Swedish artillery, Polish winged hussars, etc.)
list w formie PDF. Już teraz dostępne jest zgrupowanie
wojsk księcia Janusza Radziwiłła – jesień 1655 a niedługo
mamy otrzymać zgrupowanie Iwana Chowańskiego. Później
prawdopodobnie Rakoczego. Będzie na co czekać.
Of course, as with all attempts at something new, Polish version Task Force is not free of small errors, but an errata has already been issued. Time will also tell if the scenarios are well balanced. So far I can definitely say that that this is my favorite level of play, combining the fast play of the Skirmish force with the massiveness of the Division.

It is worth noting that Wargamer, as was the case with other levels, will publish more army lists in PDF format. We already have Prince Janusz Radziwiłł Forces – Autumn 1655 and Task Force of Ivan Khovansky was announced. Rákóczi's force will be released at a later date. There is still much to come.

Zgrupowanie Rakoczego już dostali uczestnicy Wilanowa 2018, wraz z dedykowaną figurką dowódcy ;)
Tak. Wiem. Grałem przeciwko niemu w Niepołomicach. Dla szerszej publiczności jest jednak nowością. A raczej będzie.
